Bike Ride 8
4/24/21
David: This was a fun one. For this ride we venture from Cranston, through the streets of Providence, and into the city. I saw a great variety of cars on this ride, and for some reason, lots of Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenues.
Mazda MX-5 NA Miata
This is a neighborhood gem that I see frequently. It's the good old NA Miata, complete with pop up headlights and with some modifications. You'll see me refer to these as NA Miatas or NB Miatas. The term NA referring to the first generation, and NB for the second generation. Just some Mazda facts to nerd out with.
1982 Toyota Corolla SR-5 Convertible
Now this is a unicorn of a car. It's not very often you see an older Toyota, but its always a sight when you do. It's an early '80s Corolla, with a rare convertible option. This was taken at the same place where that green Datsun 1200 was (refer to the Summer 2020 entries).
Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue
If you're familiar with the TV series Breaking Bad, this will easily ring a bell. But, for those not in the loop, its a car driven by one of the main characters, Mike Ehrmantraut. This New Yorker was spotted on Elmwood avenue in Providence, and has been seen in other locations too. A few months after seeing it at this location, it reappeared at Roger Williams Park, where it remained parked for some time. It has since moved, and I haven't seen it since then.
The car next to it was an old GM C-Body car. It may have been an Oldsmobile or a Buick. The owner was occupying the car, so I didn't photograph it.
1967 Chrysler 300 Convertible
Continuing on my journey towards the city, I stumbled upon this donked out '67 Chrysler. I saw the rear end, but didn't see what it fully looked like until I pulled in the parking lot. Honestly, it looks kind of comical. I'm so used to seeing this at their low factory ride height, that it looks like a different car on those huge rims and jacked up ride height. I do love '60s Mopar C bodies though.
Meyers Manx VW Dunebuggy
Groovy! Across the street from the Chrysler, I noticed this teal machine, a Meyers Manx Dunebuggy. Obviously this one has seen better days, but I love these. Unfortunately, I was unable to get inside the lot, so I had to poke my phone through the chain link fence, which is why the photo is on an angle and also why you see part of the fence. I hope this gets restored some day as these are such fun cars.
Above and Left: 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible Revisited
Found parked on a side street in Downtown Providence, this Mustang is probably one of the most gorgeous cars on here. We believe its a 1966 Mustang, but could be mistaken. This is the second appearance of this Mustang as well. If you recall from the Summer 2020 collection, this Mustang was for sale. Now its been bought and the new owner frequently drives it around town. This Mustang is honestly one of the best looking cars I've seen so far, and I'm really glad its been cared for.
Above: JDM Toyota Soarer GT Twin Turbo (Right Hand Drive)
The Mustang you just saw was the nicest car I found on this ride, but this is probably the coolest car I found on the ride. It's a Toyota Soarer GT with twin turbos. This is a JDM imported car, as it is a RHD vehicle. I hadn't even heard of this model before I came across it, but I just remember its front end looked super cool. I saw it drive off, and man, those twin turbos sounded great. I hope I see this again sometime soon.
Another Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue
Here is the second '80s Chrysler New Yorker I saw on this ride. For some reason, I guess everyone had their New Yorkers out today. I saw this as I was exiting the city towards my way back home. Its unmistakable headlights caught my instantly, and I knew what I was in for. Like the previous New Yorker, this is also a daily driver as it was seen driving around town. I love that people are keeping these old cars alive, and I also like that they're being cared for. New England winters are rough on older cars, and it's great to see survivors like this one.
