SC Bike Path Ride 5

5/5/22

David: This is the last South County Bike Path Ride for the semester. I was almost done with my classes, and exams were wrapping up. I decided to take one last trip down the bike path and to see if there were any more cool cars I could find before I went home for summer break. There's more future classics than classics in this entry, but there's some hidden treasures and oddities.

Mazda Mx-5 (NA) Miata at the URI Maintenance Lot

To start us off, we have a stock Mazda Miata. It's always nice to see one of these in stock condition.

1989 Dodge Ram Van B-250 at the Maintenance Lot

When is the last time you saw a Ram van like this? It's certainly been a while for me, and I was glad to see one still out on the road.

Above: 1981 Mercedes Benz 380SL (C107) at Kingston Station

These old SL class sports cars hold a special place in my heart. When I was very young, there used to be a white SL class convertible that looked very similar to this one at the end of my street. From a young age, that car always looked cool to me, and it helped influence the idea for what I thought a cool car should be. That owner moved away, and so did his car, so I never got a chance to photograph it, but this 380SL is pretty close to what it looked like.

Battered 1996 Volvo 850 in Turquoise Pearl

Also at Kingston Station, a beat up Volvo 850 sedan, finished in Turquoise Pearl was sitting in the lot. The 850 have somewhat achieved future classic status with the 850R wagon becoming a slightly collectible car. This 850 has seen better days, but I really love the blue paint, and I had never seen a Volvo in this color.

Chevy Corvette C4 near the South County Bike Path

This appears to be a late '80s era C4. I noticed it off a side road on the bike path, and went to investigate.

Above: 2006 Saab 9-5 Sportcombi 5MT in Chili Red

This may not look like it, but this is a rare Saab. This is a 9-5 wagon with a 5 speed manual, which is pretty uncommon on its own, but what makes it more rare is the color. There are only three examples of a 9-5 wagon in Chili Red with a standard transmission in the US, according to the E-Saab database. I was also fortunate enough to meet the owner, as he saw me checking the car out. We talked about Saabs for a bit, and I went on my way. This sure is one nice Saab.
