Meeting a New Friend
4/29/23
To compliment the 1990 Volvo 240 DL Car Narratives story, this Volvo Adventure will take a more personal approach. I recommend reading that article before reading this entry. You'll learn the story of the other Volvo featured in this entry, which has quite the exciting story. The owner, Stu, has big plans for it as well. Maybe we will document some of the progress on ONEC, that is yet to be determined though.
240 Squared = 57,600
Earlier that week, I was working my usual Thursday afternoon shift at the local grocery store. It was a slow day, as no one really does their weekly food shopping on a Thursday afternoon.
When I find myself bored at work - if I'm not talking with my work friends, I often stare out the window at the parking lot and the adjacent street to see if any cool cars drive by.
So, being a boring, slow Thursday, I began a long, tired gaze out the front window. Suddenly, a white 240 zipped into the lot. I was already intrigued by the fact that a 240 had pulled into the lot, but there was more to this car than the average 240. It was a little beat up, mostly stock in appearance, but it had a lowered stance. I had to know more about this car. The 240 parked close to the storefront, and a tall, younger man stepped out of the car.
The man conveniently happened to visit my checkout line, and I introduced myself and commented on his car. I told him about my 240 and about ONEC, which is how I came to meet Stu, the owner of the white 240. We arranged the Car Narratives story date, and talked Volvos for a bit before he departed.
That Saturday, I met Stu at his house to interview him about his Volvo. Once again, if you haven't read the article on his car, please go ahead and do so, because it is quite an interesting story!
Anyways, after getting the story, we once again conversed on topics, ranging from old school Volvos to other European cars to car show. Being a part time mechanic himself, Stu had worked with cars before, and planned to do some of his work at his friend's shop.
It was really cool to meet someone who also loved old Volvos and European cars like I did, especially someone who had a very similar car to mine. Since I'm pretty new to the Volvo community and car ownership, I've come to see a lot of good within the car community.
Everyone seems to love an old Volvo, despite it not being as fast as a BMW M3, or as flashy as a Nissan Skyline. Everyone has a story about a Volvo, and while I don't want to seem too conceited about my car, it makes me a bit happier knowing that I'm driving something that brings people a smile and a sense of nostalgia.
Stu's Volvo is much lower than mine!
