Mid Summer Cars
7/11/22 to 7/30/22
Can't beat the heat. This is a long thread, so be prepared.
7/11/2022 - Mercedes Benz 500SL (R107) Convertible (David)
Here's a very clean 500SL convertible that was spotted in Newport, RI. Across the street was a Volvo 240 and 300D that I was unable to photograph. Sad times.
7/11/2022 - 1969 Mercury Cougar (David)
Another work find, I spotted this on carriage duty. This is a '69 Cougar, that looks to be a pretty standard model. Nonetheless, this was a gorgeous car. I got the pleasure of hearing it drive off. Classic V8s are some of the best sounds no one can deny.
7/12/2022 - Chevy C-10 Squarebody Work Truck (David)
Sam and I spotted this on our way to O'Reilly's to pick up a brake line kit. It's a classic truck still doing its job. Nice.
Above: (7/15/2022) - Modern German Classics: 1987 Mercedes Benz 500SL (R107) and a 1998 BMW 323i (E36) Convertible (David)
These were both spotted at the Chatham Bar Inn, located in Cape Cod, MA. I was doing another wedding gig, out in Cape Cod, and in the valet lot where we were loading the gear in were these German convertibles. The Mercedes Benz is now becoming a collectors car you see at shows occasionally, but the BMW is on its way to future classic. Ironically, and as Sam pointed out, these both share the commonality of being some of the last reliable cars both manufacturers produced, before becoming victim to planned obsolescence.
7/16/2022 - Land Rover Defender 110 Rag Top (David)
Another wedding gig, another fancy classic. This time we stayed local and played in Newport, RI. This Land Rover appears to be owned by the Mariner Gallery, and might have something to do with the large tents behind it. I only saw it in passing, so I don't know the specifics, but I do know that this is one of the last classic styled Land Rovers.
Above and Left: (7/17/2022) - 1975 Chevy Corvette C3 (Sam)
This car was spotted one Sunday while I was out at church. It's a bit of a custom, with the ghost flames on the hood. The seat upholstery looks to be custom, too. Sadly this one's an auto, but I'm sure it's still fun to drive. It sounded great when the owner started it up and drove off.
Above and Left: (7/17/2022) - 1973 Dodge Challenger in Top Banana Yellow Revisited (Sam)
I've documented this car a few times already, and there isn't much new to say. I was able to get some closer shots, including the 440 magnum badge on the hood. It's an auto car, but I bet it's still fun to drive. The first photo makes the quarter panel damage look worse than it is. In reality, the damage is just a few small dents near the edge of the door. I didn't get a chance to talk to the owner, as he took off right after church got out. However, I did see the car drive by while I was at work a few more times during the Summer.
Above: (7/20/2022) - 1965 Chevy Malibu SS Convertible on I-295 (Sam)
I spotted this gem on the highway one night. Its rectangular rear and shiny chrome caught my eye amidst the sea of gray and black plastic late-model cars, and I guessed it was some 60s-70s GM product. As I got closer, I realized it was a Malibu SS convertible. This one appears to be in great shape, too! Unlike last summer, where I saw two Malibu convertibles, this was the only one I saw in 2022.
7/21/2022 - 1966 Dodge Polara Convertible w/ 383 CI Engine (Sam)
I came across this car during a delivery run for work. It was sitting at a used car dealership. Though I didn't get out and take a closer look, this 'vert appeared to be in pristine condition, even sporting the showroom 1966 plate up front. As the butcher paper on the windshield indicates, this baby is for sale, but don't expect to get it for a song. The whole paper reads "For Sale $$", so who knows exactly what price they have in mind. I'd have to say, though, given the condition of the car, it's probably well worth it.
7/23/2022 - Classics at a Service Station (Sam)
Back to Front: 1968 Chevy Chevelle (Red), Chevy Corvette C4 (Blue), 1973 Dodge Challenger (Black). Far back: '70s Ford F-Series Pickup (Blue)
Not pictured: 1st Gen Chevy Nova
This is a usual spotting ground on my route out to the radio museum in CT. The service station where these cars are parked usually has a few classics outside getting worked on. I've seen everything from Chargers to Squarebodies at this garage, and on this particular day, I was given a bit of GM and Mopar. The Challenger looks like it could use a repaint but is otherwise solid, and the Chevelle and 'Vette look ready to rumble.
Above and Left: (7/23/2022) - 1955 Chevy 210 Sedan (Sam)
This car showed up a couple of times during the drive out to the museum. I guess I'm a fan of the formerly less-desirable and less-liked cars that were often parted out to save their more favorable counterparts (probably because I own one!), so I immediately gave this 210 sedan my seal of approval. Besides, who can't fall in love with that two-tone teal? I figured I'd seen the last of the car for the day when it turned off the road we were on, but lo and behold, it pulled out in front of us as we were coming back from the museum. I think the owner was trying to go to the nearby car show that was cancelled due to the heat because he pulled into the empty field and parked.
7/23/2022 - Decommissioned 2012 Ford Crown Vic P-71 (Sam)
This survivor Crown Vic is owned by a volunteer at the museum. He's had a couple Crown Vics before this one, all retired P-71s, but this one is in great shape because he bought one of the last production cars. The Crown Vic was decommissioned in 2012, when an update in safety standards drove Ford to scrap the design rather than modify it to meet regulations. Ten years later, the last of the Crown Vic fleet vehicles are being decommissioned and sold to the public. It won't be long before these become a rare sight on the streets, just like the Caprices and Fury's that preceded them.
7/23/2022 - Custom 1964 Chevy Impala Sedan (Sam)
This car has been up for sale nearby the museum for most of the Summer. It's a '64 Impala sedan, so you know I already like it. What I'm not a huge fan of is the custom rims, but those can be easily removed. The owner's also done a two-tone job with goldenrod highlights between the two middle body lines. You can't see it too well in the photo, but the metal between the two lengths of side trim is painted yellow. I hope this car finds a good home soon!
7/25/2022 - 1975 Buick LeSabre Custom Convertible (David)
This was spotted on the same day I visited the Audrain Auto Museum. I had been walking around the town, when this '75 Buick drove by. As you can see, its a driver and looks to be original. I love classics like this, where the owner is making the effort to keep this as factory as possible. Maybe that wasn't this owner's intention, but that's what it looks like to me.
7/26/2022 - Slightly Customized Chevy Impala (Sam)
This car was in the parking lot at a nearby Lowe's. It's slightly customized, with a tint kit and aftermarket rims, but it looks to be a very clean and solid car. I felt obligated to photograph it since it's a descendant of my car. Owning an Impala has given me a bit of appreciation for Impalas in general (save 2002 and up).
7/26/2022 - Rear End Shot! 1992 Chevy IROC Camaro (Sam)
This was another find on the way back from Lowe's. I think I've seen this car before, but I've seen so many IROCs that I can't be certain. Though I only saw the back half of it, this car looked to be in good shape. Shortly after this photo was taken, I returned home where David and I installed the new OER gas tank in my car (after some persuasion with a mallet). More on that in my Impala series.
7/26/2022 - Cadillacs Old and New: '80s Fleetwood and '90s Sedan DeVille (Sam)
These cars were spotted during the mini bike ride that David and I went on after buttoning up my car and getting it back on the ground for the first time in a month. In the back is an older 80s Fleetwood and behind it, its 90s counterpart. This was a cool find as it represented two generations of Cadillac in one driveway.
7/29/2022 - Plymouth Reliant K-Car (David)
This was spotted on my way to work. It's a very early model Plymouth Reliant, and a very well kept one I must say. I was glad to see this still making its way around town. Safe voyages, K-Car!
Above: (7/30/2022) - 1989 Saab 900 Turbo Combi Coupe (David)
This was the first Saab 900 I ever drove! See 1989 Saab 900 Turbo to read more about it and the driving experience.
